Meet a PRO – The FreightPros Interview Series : Larry Garcia

Garcia….Larry, Garcia.
First time around? Check out all of our previous interviews and get to know your freight broker. Sheridan has some interesting thoughts concerning whistling. Morgan has a nice sweater she likes to wear. Ashley is UT for life. Name: Larry Garcia Position: Truckload Rep, or basically anything and everything truckload. Hometown: Eagle Pass, Texas. It’s right on the border. When I was a teenager I used to go over to Mexico every weekend to get into the clubs and bars and stuff. It was still pretty safe at that point, so that was our “go-to” party scene. I was tall so they let me in! Haha. University: Proud Texas Longhorn. Class of 2004. Major in Spanish and Biology. How long have you been a FreightPro? About a year and a half. What’s one word to describe the freight industry? Extensive. Well put. How long have you called Austin home? Long time…16 years. About half of my life. I doubt I’ll ever leave Austin, and there’s no way I could leave Texas. What’s your favorite thing about Austin? I would say that I have three favorite things. The music, the food, and the parks. Like Zilker Park? Zilker is fun, but I’m referring more to state and county parks in the area. I’m a big camping guy so I enjoy the abundance of parks to explore and hang out. Nature and all that good stuff, ya know? Well, personally I’m allergic to sunlight, but I get what you’re saying. What’s your least favorite thing about Austin? Cedar Fever. No doubt. For me, it starts in early December and goes into February. Several months of hell. What is the coolest place you’ve ever visited? My wife and I visited some friends in Salou, Spain back in 2006. It was amazing. It’s a laid back beach town about 45 minutes south of Barcelona. Our friends are from the area so they took us all around the Basque country. It was so great. Spain is my favorite place in the entire world, especially Barcelona. The people? The food? Amazing. There was this place called Tarragona. They have a bunch of Roman ruins and stuff. They even have a mini coliseum. What’s your favorite book and/or movie? I really like “The Great Gatsby,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” for books. For movies, I love “Major League,” “Coming to America,” and pretty much all the “Rocky” movies. I can quote all those movies.  What’s the best “Rocky” movie? Great question! I would say my favorite is the fourth one, with the Soviet Union / Cold War thing happening. If you’re looking for straight story, the third one is pretty badass. Clubber Lang, ya know? No love for Apollo Creed. Speaking of boxing, what’s your favorite sport and team? Football and Texas Longhorns. I used to be an old school Houston Oilers fan with Warren Moon and the crew, but I don’t have an NFL team now. Alright, let’s say you’re stranded on a desert island, what are you taking with you, food-wise? Cheese enchiladas, BBQ, and tortilla chips. Not to mention some Corona.  What’s your desert island soundtrack? “Legend,” by Bob Marley. And one thing you’d have to take with you to the island? My BBQ smoker. Don’t leave home without it. It’s time for the lightning round. Apples or oranges? Oranges. Beatles or Stones? Beatles Fox News or NPR? NPR. George Strait or Garth Brooks? George. Final question. What’s your hidden talent? Don’t really have a hidden talent. I have the three “F’s” : Food, Football, and Family. Those are what occupy my life. I can’t really argue with that.
