Meet a PRO – The FreightPros Interview Series: Ethan Halliday

Don't hipster my Austin, bro
Don’t hipster my Austin, bro
Welcome to another edition of “Meet a Pro,” where we introduce the FreightPros to our customers and friends via a series of VERY INTENSE interview questions (Okay, so maybe not that intense). As a third party freight broker, we rarely get the pleasure to meet our customers face to face, so this is a way to show everyone what we’re all about. This week we talk to Ethan. Don’t forget to check out some of the previous interviews here. Let’s do this… Position: Sales Rep Hometown: Albuquerque, New Mexico. How often do you get asked about Breaking Bad? Every. Single. Time. What do you want to ask? Did you ever run into Walter White? I saw Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul a couple times on campus. It was awesome. That is awesome. Alright, back to the interview. University? New Mexico Lobos. How long have you been a FreightPro? Seven months. In one word describe the freight industry. Jaded. That’s a pretty good answer. How long have you lived in Austin? About nine months. I was working in Denver and ended up here. Denver is cool, Austin is better. Preach. What’s your favorite thing about Austin? I love the culture. Food, booze, and the relaxed nature of the place and the people. My favorite part of town is the east side. There’s a restaurant over there, Justine’s, it’s probably my favorite place to eat in town. My girlfriend’s sister’s fiancé is the sous chef over there and the food is ridiculously great. Plus the atmosphere is unique and top notch. Least favorite thing about Austin? The roads are terrible. Potholes and bumps and poorly timed lights. It’s insane. What’s the coolest place you’ve ever visited? Telluride, Colorado. I went on a snowboarding trip up there my senior year and it was such a great, magical place. Fantastic place for memories, you know? The drive is great. I would say it’s my most memorable spot. Let’s talk some pop culture. What’s your favorite book? The Old Man and the Sea, by Hemingway. Of Mice and Men, by Steinbeck. Short, subtle, and to the point. Nice choices. Favorite movie? That’s a tough one. I like all of Christopher Nolan’s movies, and for a guilty pleasure, can’t help but love the Ocean’s movies. Who doesn’t love Matt Damon? Too true. Favorite sport? I love pretty much everything. Soccer, football, basketball. I’ll watch them all. Alright, so it’s the “Desert Island Round.” If you’re stranded, what are three foods or drinks you’re taking with you? Pizza from Dion’s in Albuquerque, Belgian waffles, and everything I would need for a lifetime supply of French bread sandwiches. If you could hire a band… Band of Horses. One thing you couldn’t leave behind? A yo-yo. I would take my island time to become a yo-yo master. It’s a bucket list thing. I’m joking obviously. Why do you like working at FreightPros? I like the autonomy and freedom provided to learn. I enjoy that everyone, especially management, is open to new ideas and wants to learn how to do things better. Also, there’s the keg. Can’t forget the keg. What’s your workplace radio station of choice? I think the My Morning Jacket Pandora station is the most well-rounded. And your choice for the keg? I love pale ales. My favorite comes from Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, CO. It’s right down the street from where Maya grew up. What are some of your favorite things to do around town? Now that summer is coming, I’ve been making a lot of trips to the natural watering holes around the area. Barton Springs, Hamilton Pool, places like that. Then of course, I like to frequent the other watering holes on the east side as well. Final question. Do you have a hidden talent? I wouldn’t say it’s hidden, but I’m really good with my hands and catching stuff. In college I played rugby for the school, and my only job was the “line out.” Basically, it’s when they toss the ball up and I was always the guy that caught it. I was great at it! I was injured pretty much the rest of the time, but not on the line out. No sir! So yeah, I have good hands.
