Cwright + Starbucks = Real Talk
On a Tuesday at Starbucks, I talked to Christie Wright for our next installment of “Meet a Pro.” Though this was the first time Starbucks had been involved, it was hardly the first interview. Curious about Larry’s sports allegiances? Where the heck is Matt from ? All these questions and more answered at our “Meet a Pro,” blog page. Position: Well, that’s complicated. Officially, I’m the HR manager. That being said, I still handle a few billing and collections tasks and issues when necessary. Hometown: Austin, TX. Born and raised in South Austin. Education: Undergrad at Austin College; a tiny school in the middle of nowhere that I loved. Right now, I’m in Grad School at UT and will be finishing that soon. It’s kind of funny, I always thought I would be going to UT for undergrad, so it’s nice to come full circle and finally be a real Longhorn. How long have you been a FreightPro? Almost three years. In one word, describe the freight industry. Nuts!! But in a good way. I always tell people we make the best of it at FreightPros. How long have you lived in Austin? All my life. Why would I ever want to move? I love it here. What’s your favorite thing about Austin? My favorite thing is how accepting this place is. I feel like you can be anyone you want to be in Austin. Least favorite thing? All this growth! I’m a little bit of the, “Local who is bummed out about losing her city,” but I also recognize all the good things that come from the influx of people. With new people come new ideas, restaurants, bars, and lots of other things that ultimately make Austin more interesting. That being said, there’s definitely a part of me that wishes people would just stop showing up! Coolest place you’ve ever visited? Okay, I can’t have just one so I’m going to say some of my favorite spots. You like to travel? I LOVE to travel. I’ve been to Patagonia, and that was pretty cool. I hiked on a glacier! Never thought I would do that. Another really great place is Cappadocia in Turkey. And finally…Colorado. Where in Colorado? A little place called Cuchara. Fun fact: Red Mccombs has a house there. Are you a fan of Colorado winter or summer? Definitely summer. Come August you’ve got to escape the Texas heat, and Colorado weather is just perfect for hiking and other fun outdoor stuff. Favorite book or movie? I do not like to pick just one thing with these questions, because my choices are always changing! I want to pass on this question. I’m sorry, no can do. We’ve got to have an answer. It’s very important. Fine, I will say, “Eat, Pray, Love,” is one of my favorite books that I could read over and over again. But if you ask tomorrow, I’ll probably come up with something else. Now if we’re talking favorite restaurants… Let’s hear them. There’s so many! I love Pho Van, this amazing vermicelli place. Trudy’s (an office favorite), Indian Buffett, Rio’s Brazilian, Aster’s Ethiopian Restaurant, The Salt-Lick BBQ. The list goes on and on. Speaking of food, if you’re trapped on a deserted island, what are three foods you’d have to have with you? Ribs from The Salt-Lick, Malbec red wine from my days of living in Argentina, and old fashioned mac-n-cheese. Delicious. What about a band or record to listen to? Bob Schneider. Without a doubt. One thing you could take with you to the island? My cat, Lila! I’ve met your cat. She is amazing and great 🙂 Why do you like working at FreightPros? I love that we get to wear so many different hats. It’s never boring, always engaging, and there’s a level of creativity allowed and encouraged that is unique to an industry like freight. What’s your Pandora radio station of choice at the office? Bob Schneider. Again? Yes, sir. And your choice for the keg? Live Oak Hef, preferably with a lemon I bought from Randall’s across the street. Being a native Austinite, what are some of your favorite things to do around town? I love to bike around and in general just walk around and find cool stuff to do. Just the other day, I was downtown and I found a comedy club doing a show. So we went and it was great! Just some comedy and sushi, out of the blue. That’s what I like to do, just find fun, random things to participate in. Final question. What’s your hidden talent? I can pick up anything with my toes. I could probably pick up this chair. You would think something like that would be pointless, but it’s actually rather useful! Also, I used to do gymnastics, so from time to time I’ll still do a tumble or two. If you find yourself in a field with the necessary space? Exactly.
