Meet a PRO – The FreightPros Interview Series: Maya Brown

Maya Brown – Lover of all things Peyton Manning, Hater of Pete Carroll
It’s finally come to pass, as they said it would; today we interview our first intern (she’s not our first intern, only the first to be interviewed for our groundbreaking “Meet a Pro” series). Like what you read? Check out some previous interviews with the likes of Sheridan, Ashley, or Emilio. You can see the full list here. Meet a Pro: Maya Brown Position: Operations Intern. I’m an amateur FreightPro – I haven’t moved up to the big leagues yet. Hometown: Greeley, Colorado. It’s about an hour north of Denver, on the plains. People are always surprised that I’m from Colorado but not from the mountains. I don’t even ski! University: I’m a proud Texas Longhorn.  How long have you been a FreightPro?  I started last August, so about nine months. In one word, describe the freight industry?  Fast-paced. There’s a hyphen. 🙂 How long have you lived in Austin?  Almost four years. I graduate in May and I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. This is my home now. What’s your favorite thing about Austin?  There are so many things that I love, but my favorite is the atmosphere. There is so much positive energy here, in this city, because everyone wants to be here. So many Austinites are passionate about being here so it’s such a positive vibe and that vibe runs through the city from the restaurants to the running paths. Least favorite thing?  Everyone says traffic, and I guess that sucks too, but the worst part is all the waiting. You have to wait for restaurants. Wait for concerts. There’s always a line, no matter where you go. I suppose that applies to traffic as well. Coolest place you’ve ever been?  Last summer I went backpacking around Europe for six weeks and my favorite spot was Croatia. It was such a pleasant surprise, such a cool place. The weather and the scenery was just too much, and it was still kind of hidden as it wasn’t (at that time) part of the U.N. What’s your favorite book?  I really like the book, “Three Cups of Tea,” about a humanitarian that takes starts buildings schools and stuff for children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I’m also a sucker for Harry Potter, though. He’s the man. Favorite movie?  I really like “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “Julie & Julia.” Do you have a favorite sport?  I love sports! Soccer and Football, to be exact. I’m a huge MLS fan, growing up in Colorado, of the Colorado Rapids. Then there’s John Elway and the Denver Broncos. I can’t get enough. HUGE fan of the Broncos! Say you’re stranded on a desert island, only you have time to pack. What are some foods you would take with you?  Pancakes, pickles, and a good Merlot. That sounds….delicious? Right? What about for a soundtrack?  Trevor Hall. He’s like a reggae vibe and beach-y. Good stuff, I promise. One special thing you couldn’t live without?  I would take some paints with me – good old Acrylic.  And of course, something to paint on and with. Why do you think FreightPros is a cool place to work?  The open-mindedness in regard to opportunity. It’s nice to have a voice and know that everyone from the owner to the interns is going to listen and pay attention to your ideas or complaints. Plus, everyone is really cool and nice. What’s your station when you’re workplace radio DJ?  Lately I’ve been on an Etta James kick. We have a keg in the back. What’s your beer selection?  Well, my favorite is Blue Moon. (Ed. note: Blue Moon has been banned from keg action per Chris Clever, president of FreightPros). We all love Austin. What are some of your favorite hobbies and things to do around town?  I love to go to Zilker Park to throw the frisbee, play volleyball, or just hang out with friends and be outside in the beautiful weather. I also love concerts, my favorite place to go is Stubb’s. And then, of course, there’s the Tex-Mex. Oh, how the Tex-Mex gets me. Final question. Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what is it?  I have a really weird/awesome memory when it comes to birthdays. I will remember, like, my childhood neighbors birthday and stuff, even if we haven’t spoken in years. That’s why Facebook sucks, it takes all the value out of my greatest talents. Now it’s easy to remember everyone’s birthday. Not cool, Facebook!
