At FreightPros, the question isn’t if we should play music in the office, but rather what we should play that day. In our office, there is no awkward silence coming from the speakers over our heads; only tunes. One day it’s Britney Spears, and the next it’s Led Zeppelin. We’re nothing if not well-rounded. This is the live music capital of the world, isn’t it? Studies have shown that in most cases, listening to music while working can increase your mood and increase overall work productivity. Music and melody, or melodious sounds, biologically encourage the release of dopamine, a feel-good chemical in the brain. People love music for many of the same reasons they like eating good food, or watching their favorite teams play. IT JUST MAKES US FEEL GOOD! In some cases, classical music has been proven to reduce stress and work as a sleep-aid. This type of music would be beneficial during a time-critical project, or even after a long day at work. In the office, listening to music has been shown to promote a sense of team unity and bonding. On a personal note, when my co-workers and I catch each other singing aloud it always causes a laugh. As far as productivity, studies have shown that background music keeps workers more focused on tasks and prevents their minds from wandering. In a sense, the constant noise keeps the brain in the present. Music is an integral part of our office culture and can be considered a useful tool depending on the desired result. So next time you feel like you need a pick-me-up at work, skip the coffee and put on one of your favorite tunes! cc image courtesy Photo4Jenifer via Flickr
