Austin Texas – Taco Town USA

IMG_0007First gradually, and more recently at light speed, the capital of Texas has transformed from a mid-size city most famous for live music and UT to…something else entirely. Though it might be hard to find the right words for what Austin was, is, and will be, there is one constant in this ever-evolving, truly special place. TACOS. 5 letters, one revolution. Now listen, I’ve read the lists of taco joints around the United States, and certainly Austin doesn’t have a monopoly on the taco market, but this is a taco town more than any other. It might take some planning, but next time you’re in the ATX, don’t miss some of our FreightPros favorite spots. Taco Deli – Full disclosure, this taco spot was one of the reasons I moved to Austin in the first place. It was my first taste of Austin tacos and upon sampling the famous “Cowboy” taco and after one too many Robert Earl Keen songs, I figured there was no place better than Austin, and no taco place better than Taco Deli. Tacos you can’t miss: The Cowboy, Chicken Mole, & Mojo Fish. Torchy’s Tacos – The ying to Taco Deli’s yang, Torchy’s started as a food trailer and quickly expanded to brick and mortar. Currently, there are 10 locations in Austin alone, with others popping up in Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Houston. The fundamental differences between Taco Deli and Torchy’s could fill up a UT student’s senior year thesis but if you HAVE to choose a side, think of Torchy’s as Taco Deli’s greasier, crazier, and infinitely cheesier cousin. Tacos you can’t miss: Fried Avocado, The Democrat, & Brush Fire. Papalote Taco House – This hidden gem of a taqueria is located in the heart of South Austin, it’s only location in town. While certainly more under the radar than our previous two picks, there’s plenty to love about this modest eatery. They serve more authentic Mexican than our previous picks, less gourmet and more classic. Get in there quick though, as each day the line gets just a bit longer. Tacos you can’t miss: Guajolote en Mole, Carnitas, & Pastor. Veracruz All Natural – Last but not least, comes the trailer Veracruz, with a great spot on East 6th (among others). Famously, Rachael Ray once gave the Migas tacos here her stamp of approval, calling them some of the best tacos in the USA, but there’s plenty here to love. Like all of our previous spots, this is affordable, delicious, and a great addition to the ATX taco pantheon. Tacos you can’t miss: Pastor, Migas, & Fish Taco. On a final note, though the above selections are all proven winners, there’s always a new taco spot opening or closing, and we’re sure we missed some along the way. We’re always looking to expand our taco horizons, whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, so if you find a good taco spot that we missed leave the name in the comments for us to check out. Considering we get office tacos twice a month MINIMUM, it’ll be no time before Taco Town USA…Part II.
