In American culture, February 14th marks a day for love. We don red and pink, buy giant teddy bears, and try to obtain dinner reservations at the new hot spot in town. We do this to show our loved ones appreciation. Yep, you guessed it – it is Valentine’s Day! But if you ask me, V-Day is the runner up when it comes to Feb. 14th. Forget the chocolates and candies, I’ll take the Austin freakin’ Marathon and Half-Marathon. The race celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year (which is crazy), and I’m sure Austin looks pretty different than it did a quarter of a century ago. Our marathon has guided novices and expert runners through the streets of Austin since 1992. It covers 26.2 miles of South Congress Avenue, the University of Texas campus, over Lady Bird Johnson Lake, and includes a finish line near the State Capitol. Up to 5,000 participants for the marathon, and 12,000 for the half-marathon can participate, and the official philanthropy program, Austin Gives Miles, raises hundreds of thousands for local charities. Runners travel from all corners of the country to participate, and one special runner this year is my mom, Sue. She is flying in from Colorado, and this will be her first marathon ever. Two years ago, my mom set a goal to run a marathon by her 65th birthday. With this intimidating feat in mind, Sue started training and competing in 5k races to get her going. Soon she found a community of runner friends, including her good friend Ronnie, “The Flashlight Finisher”. Although most of her miles have been logged on Colorado’s wintry roads and at a mile high elevation, Sue chose the Austin Marathon as her first because the weather is great, and the people are pretty great too! 🙂 My mom jokes that people often brag how they have finished a marathon; they don’t say that they runthe entire race. She is prepared to be a finisher, no matter the time it takes. I am SO proud of my mom for setting this goal and cannot wait to shower her with love at the finish line.
